Winfield "Scotty" Hughes Jr.

Winfield Scott Hughes, Jr. – Scotty - aged 80, of Tuscaloosa, died in Tuscaloosa, Alabama on 7 June 2023. Services for Mr. Hughes will be Thursday, June 15, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church.  There will be a visitation immediately following the service at the church.

 

Scotty was born in 1943 in Birmingham and was a lifelong resident of Tuscaloosa. He attended Verner Elementary School and Tuscaloosa Junior School before graduating from Tuscaloosa High School in 1962.

 

He was a graduate of the Marion Military Institute and the University of Alabama. He served his country in the Air Force Reserve. He worked at Greene Beverage Company for many years and retired from Tuscaloosa County.

 

Scotty’s family arrived in the Tuscaloosa area before Alabama was a state and he was devoted to historical preservation and genealogical research. He was active in the Military Order of the Stars and Bars, the Order of the Southern Cross, the Sons of the Confederate Veterans, the Sons of the American Revolution, the War of 1812 Society, and the American Battlefield Trust.

 

Scotty will be remembered by his family and friends as a man with a gentle demeanor who demonstrated kindness to everyone he knew and met. He loved playing golf, traveling, volunteering at the Soup Bowl, and spending time with friends.

 

Scotty was preceded in death by his wife of 25 years, Kathleen Patrick Hughes of Tuscaloosa, his parents, Winfield and Helen Hughes of Tuscaloosa, a sister, Joyce Hughes of Birmingham, and a nephew, Eddie Lusk, Jr. of Marietta.

 

Scotty is survived by a sister, Joanne Hughes Lusk of Warner Robins, GA, and nieces, Alline Lusk Kent (Ronnie) of Warner Robins, GA, Mary Wallace Patrick Broome (Matthew) of Augusta, GA, and Ellie Patrick Lovvorn (Jeb) of Athens, AL. He is also survived by several great-nieces and nephews, one great-great-nephew, and many cousins. Scotty’s six godsons were very special to him. He is also survived by his significant other, Barbara Winstead.

 

There will be a private family service at Evergreen Cemetery in Tuscaloosa followed by a memorial service and celebration of Scotty’s life at 11 am on June 15, 2023, at First Presbyterian Church. The Reverend Michael Bailey will be officiating.
