Steven Bruce Shockley was born in San Mateo California on April 18th, 1949. The son of an Air Force Pilot, Steve spent much of his childhood experiencing a life of adventure, living in faraway beautiful places like Libya, Germany, and Hawaii. There will be a Requiem Mass Monday, August 31, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to service time. Father Michael Deering will be officiating the mass. Norwood-Wyatt Chapel will be directing the service.

He eventually found his way to the University of Alabama, where he earned a degree in Commerce and Business Administration - and more importantly, where he met the love of his life, Nancy.

Steve & Nancy were married for 55 years and built a beautiful life together, raising two children, Steven Jr. and Allison, and later becoming grandparents to three grandchildren, Kahlil, Anya, and Wyatt.

Steve dedicated his career to developing alumni programs for universities, work that took him from Alabama to California, Tennessee, and Ohio before bringing him home again to Alabama.

Throughout his life he was deeply involved in his community and in numerous fraternal and social organizations. He held leadership positions in most of them, including Sigma Chi Fraternity, The Knights of Columbus, The Sherriff’s Posse, The Elks Lodge, Rotary, and others. He gave generously of his time, energy and friendship wherever he was involved.

Steve knew how to enjoy life. His passions included Alabama football, playing gin & poker with friends, travelling, golfing, surfing big waves in Hawaii & California, ice cream, and above all, his family. He will be remembered for his charm, warm smile, never ending sense of humor and his remarkable ability to make life fun for the people around him.

His grandchildren held a particularly special place in his heart. When Steve was asked what grandparent name he would prefer, without hesitation he replied, “Well, I’ve always wanted to be called handsome!” And so, “Handsome” he became. From that moment on, instead of referring to him as grandpa, he was affectionately known as Handsome, a name that suited him perfectly.

Steve passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by people he loved. He leaves behind a family and countless friends who will miss his laughter, jokes, stories, smiles, and the joy he brought into their lives.

Steve and his family are especially grateful to Hospice of West Alabama for the love, compassion and guidance they provided him and his family during his final days.

Steve lived an adventurous life filled with family, friends, and fun. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
