Mattie Irene Whitley Hubbert was born on June 17, 1922, to Clem Whitley and Eula White Whitley. She served her Savior as a pastor’s wife, teaching Bible study courses to children, and providing food and clothing for the underprivileged. She read the Bible through every year. Mrs. Hubbert worked in sewing factories and made everything from custom ladies’ apparel to military uniforms. She shared her knowledge as a supervisor at the Arrow Shirt Factory in Carbon Hill, Alabama, and as an instructor at Mississippi State College for Women. Her vegetable garden was greatly appreciated by family and friends. She enjoyed sharing her knowledge of gardening with us. No one could read an almanac as well as she did, and nobody could sharpen a hoe like “Grandma.” She was a faithful sender of birthday cards with hidden, homemade pockets with gifts hidden inside. Grandma was ever giving godly advice and support to everyone around her. She loved her family. We will miss her greatly. Pallbearers are Dale Whitley, Tom Hubbert, James M. Hubbert, Jr., Tom Whitley, Dwayne Hubbert, and Riley Hubbert. Honorary Pallbearers are Dr. Martha Christian, Hospice of Northwest Alabama, Fayette County Nursing Home, Bro. Larry and Susan Harkness.
