Mary Abernathy

August 21, 1930 — September 29, 2019

Mary Abernathy, age 89 of Fayette, passed away Sunday, September 29, 2019. Services will be Wednesday, October 2, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Hill Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, October 1, 2019 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Norwood-Wyatt Chapel Funeral Home. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service at the church. Mrs. Abernathy was preceded in death by her husband, Buril Abernathy; her parents, Crate and Audie Clanton; and brother, Richard Clanton. Mary was full of love. Her children, grandkids and great grandkids were her heart. She enjoyed watching Alabama football and coaching the Tide to a win from the recliner. She loved cooking and baking as she was always giving away homemade baked bread and other goodies. She worked 24 years at Westinghouse in Pickens County and enjoyed attending her work reunion luncheons several times a year. She was a born again Christian and loved her church family. Her life was centered around her family and friends. She will be greatly missed and forever loved. She is survived by her daughter, Brenda A. Burkhalter (James) of Fayette; son, Buril Dale Abernathy (Debbie) of Fayette; sisters, Sue Clanton Brown and Martha Clanton Junkin (Raymond) both of Northport; grandchildren, David Burkhalter (Darlene) of Coker, Tanya B. Lister (Kenneth) of Fayette, Jonathan Burkhalter (Natalyn) of Fayette, Brandon Abernathy (Mindi) of Northport, and Kristen Abernathy of Northport; and great grandchildren; Hunter Lister, Leeanna Burkhalter, Mary Kensley Lister all of Fayette, and Brody and Tyson Abernathy of Northport. Pallbearers will be David Burkhalter, Kenneth Lister, Jonathan Burkhalter, Brandon Abernathy, Hunter Lister, Brody Abernathy, and Tyson Abernathy. Honorary pallbearers will be Fayette Medical Center Long Term Care staff (especially the 300 hall nurses), McDonald’s Breakfast Club, Westinghouse employees, members of Chapel Hill Baptist Church, and Dr. Fred Yerby and staff. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Chapel Hill Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 538, Fayette, AL 35555.
