Lois Adeline Prewitt

November 16, 1923 — July 12, 2025

Tuscaloosa

Faith became Sight for Lois Adeline Thomas Prewitt on July 12th, 2025 when she passed into the arms of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Wife, Mother, Mimi, sister, aunt and friend, she was 101 years loved.

The Celebration Service, officiated by Pastor Will McGee and Chaplain Jonathan Ivy, will be held on Sunday, July 20, 2025 at 2 PM at Calvary Baptist Church. Visitation begins at 1 PM. The family will have a private graveside service at Evergreen Cemetery. Norwood-Wyatt Chapel will be directing the service.

She was born in Verbena, Alabama, on November 16th, 1923. She was thankful for her godly parents, John Richard Thomas, a farmer, and Ressie Mae Norrell, a homemaker. While she was still a child, the family moved to Billingsley, Alabama, where she resided until her marriage to Charles Boyd Prewitt of Tuscaloosa. She was a member of Calvary Baptist for 59 years. She was proud to be acknowledged the oldest member though she was unable to attend worship services in her later years. When able, she still enjoyed attending the Keenagers luncheons.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Charles Prewitt, her parents, Mr. Mrs. John Richard Thomas, and four siblings, Evelyn Hollon, Magdalene McHearg, Amos Thomas and James Thomas.

She is survived by her daughters, Celeste Wyatt (Ferral) of Tuscaloosa and Gail Tait of Mobile, Alabama, and son, Richard Prewitt (Lisa), of Tuscaloosa, her beloved grandchildren, Jennifer Blackwell (David), Kristin Orr (Jon), Amelia Driscoll (Scott), James ‘Bo’ Tait, and Charles ‘Chip’ Tait (Rebecca). Her great grands, Aiden, Lauren, Tait, Deuce, Mattie Adeline, Luke, Frank, Christian, Dakota, Judah, Layla, Elijah, Olivia and Isaac, and great-great grands, Zelekai and Zosiah, all brought her much joy. She is also survived by her sister, Margie Louise Hardy of Camden, Alabama, and Charles Thomas of Billingsley, Alabama, as well as many loving nieces and nephews who hold a special place in her heart.

We remember her for her tenacious cheer, her unfailingly grateful attitude and her warm open heart.

A loving and attentive wife, a devoted mother and a faithful friend to many, her chief love always remained her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She rarely missed an opportunity to testify of His goodness. She knew He is the Way, the Truth and the Life and it was the goal of her nightly prayers that all those she loved so intensely would also receive Him. She could be heard in her room naming each and every one of the children and grandchildren, friends, neighbors, presidents and governors, before she could lay her head to rest. This passion to be assured that you would all join her one day in Glory remained with her as her life was ending.

When people asked the secret to her longevity, she was quick to give all the credit to the Lord, but she was also willing to share some practical tidbits; hum and sing a lot, exercise vigorously, eat selectively, take time to relax, stay in touch with friends and loved ones, take vitamins, and listen to music. She didn’t let herself be distracted by the small things. Her life remained simple and modest. She wanted all the best for her children, grands and greats but she did not concern herself with luxuries for herself.

She described herself as a ‘people person’ and we could not agree more! She used every interaction as a possible opportunity to witness for her Jesus. During her stint as an Avon saleslady, she made certain to begin with prayer that God use her to bless her potential customers. She loved to hear the details of your life and background, and we remained astonished at her capacity to recall these minute facts even after many years had passed. She made life-long friends with many she met while walking at the mall with Charles and later as she participated at Focus 50+. The saying ‘she never met a stranger’ was never truer of anyone.

Even as her eyesight began to fade, she did not complain. Many people were not aware of how severe her disability was as she found a way to continue to care for herself and for others. We were warmed to hear tell of conversations with hurting and downtrodden people. Compassion and patience came easily to her as she never forgot the challenges of her own upbringing and life, dealing with poverty during the Great Depression and with losses of parents, husband and siblings. She carried on through the covid epidemic despite long lonely hours of isolation and took the cancer treatments in stride. She still found joy in cheering for her beloved Crimson Tide when she could barely make out the images on the screen.

The family is so grateful to be able to share these memories and moments of celebration for a life truly well lived. She often said she was ready for Jesus in those last weeks. She passed on peacefully at home surrounded by her family. A blessed life and a beautiful death.
