Jovencio Espejo de los Reyes, 82, of Tuscaloosa, passed away November 27, 2020 at RCH Regional Medical Center. He was born on December 20, 1937 in Indang, Cavite, Philippines. He finished his Doctor of Medicine in 1963 at Far Easter University in Manila, Philippines. He migrated to Tuscaloosa, Alabama in March,1974 to join his fiancée (Amelia) and they got married in June,1974. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Princeton Baptist Medical Center and at Montclair Medical Center in Birmingham, Alabama. He worked at Partlow State School and Hospital with Dr. Ruby Tyler. He went into private practice in 1983. He was the Medical Director at Park Manor Nursing Home, Glen Haven Nursing Home, Moundville Nursing Home and at Martinview Assisted Living. He was the Medical Director at Alice Kidd Nursing Home until its closure. He joined the medical staff at Taylor Hardin Secure Medical Facility till his retirement in August 2020. He was a very caring, compassionate and kind doctor. He was nominated twice by the Department of Mental Health Advocates as the "Best Physician of the Year." His patients and their family called him Dr. D or Dr. Jo. He loved taking care of his patients. He was a great family man, he loved being with his children and grandchildren. He loved watching his grandchildren compete in basketball, softball gymnastics and soccer. He loved being with his friends. He will be missed tremendously. Preceded in death by his parents, Jose Fidel de los Reyes and Soledad Espejo de los Reyes; and grandparents, Gregoria Fidel, Manuel de los Reyes; Eduarda Banaag, Marcos Espejo. Survivors are his spouse, Dr. Amelia Espino de los Reyes of Tuscaloosa, Alabama; daughter, Madonna de los Reyes Breece (Scott) of Franklin, Tennessee; sons, Jay Espino de los Reyes of Berkeley, Michigan, Marc Espino de los Reyes (Errica) of Huntsville, Alabama; sisters, Clemencia R. Interior of Toronto, Canada, Nelia R. Espejo of Indang, Cavite, Philippines, Celia R. Valmonte (Rolando) of Toronto, Canada; brother, Oscar Espejo de los Reyes (Maria Teresa) of Muntinglupa, Philippines; sister in law, Maria Corazon Pizarro of Tuscaloosa, Alabama; nephew, Mario Joven Pizarro of Tuscaloosa, Alabama; grandchildren, Amelia Grace Patricia Breece, Hensley Claire de los Reyes, Emma Hayden de los Reyes, Olivia Ann de los Reyes, Chloe Harper de los Reyes. Services will be 1:00 PM on Friday, December 18, 2020 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Visitation after burial at Holy Spirit Catholic Church Parish Hall. Presiding Clergy is Father Dearing. Dr. de los Reyes will be laid to rest in Holy Spirit Catholic Church Columbarium after the memorial service. Norwood-Wyatt Chapel Funeral Home is directing. Honorary pallbearers are Nelson Napenas, Dr. Donato Quizon, Pablito Agustin, Sonny Corpuz, Bobby Vasquez, Dr. Dante Gamboa, Larry Townsend, Dr. John Ferguson, Dr. Chundria, Dr. Naresh Kumar, Dr, Bala Sundar, DCH COVID ICU Staff, and Robert Sartain. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Holy Spirit Catholic Church Building Fund and DCH Regional Medical Center Patient Impact Fund.
