James M Hubbert Sr. passed away on September 27, 2025, in the town where he was born September 17, 1940. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, sailor, teacher, and farmer at heart, he was a true renaissance man for his time and a child of God who took great joy in serving others. Raised with a respect for hard work and a deep love of family, he married the love of his life, Cynthia, in 1963. A few years prior he had embarked on a distinguished 22-year career in the United States Navy Submarine Service, where, aboard nuclear-powered submarines, he travelled the world. He retired in 1981 as a Master Chief Electricians Mate (EMCM), immensely proud of the sailors he trained and the missions he completed. This native son of Fayette returned home to start the next chapters of his life.
Jim was a travel/study partner for his beloved wife as she navigated Nursing School and he himself very proudly graduated with two Associate degrees from Bevill State Community College followed by a Bachelor degree from the Mississippi University for Women. He took great pride in, and many successful years later retired from, what would be his second career as Director of Institutional Research and Planning at Bevill State. From Nuclear Power School to Bevill State to the powerful and invaluable life lessons and life skills he imparted to his children and grandchildren, Jim was a born teacher. He and Cynthia had a natural gift and desire to help anyone who needed a hand. Jim could fix and break and fix again just about anything. He relished every opportunity to teach, in and out of the classroom, anyone who would pause long enough to listen.
Through it all, he was a simple farmer at heart who loved, in his words, "playing in the dirt" and riding his tractors at every opportunity. In his various gardens and fields, he could grow most anything and loved to gift his homegrown produce (watermelons and the very best tomatoes) to friends, family and strangers alike.
Jim will be remembered for the tremendous love he had for his wife and family, his passion for sharing knowledge and joy and, lastly, for his true servant's heart. After 60 years of partnership here in this life, Jim and Cynthia are reunited now, together again and forever. As they would often declare to one another, their love endures "always."
