George Winton Ray III, age 58, of Vernon, Alabama, passed away on May 25, 2025 in a Columbus, Mississippi hospital. He was born on October 26, 1966, in Greensboro, North Carolina to the late George “Sonny” W. Ray Jr. and Mary Juanita Sands.
Though born in North Carolina, George spent the majority of his life in Mobile, Alabama. He was a proud 1985 graduate of Murphy High School in Mobile. Shortly after high school, he attended Bishop State Community College obtaining a degree in electronics. With a heart of service, George dedicated his life to helping others as a first responder. He became a certified EMT in 1989 and went on to earn his Intermediate EMT certification in 1999 from Alabama Fire College. Over the years he also completed numerous professional certifications through the Alabama Fire College in Mobile.
George served honorably as a firefighter and EMT for the Mobile County Region and Lamar County, Alabama for nearly 40 years, touching countless lives through his courage, skill, and compassion. His commitment to public service left a lasting impact on the communities and students he served. In addition to his work as a first responder, George proudly served in the United States Navy Reserves for seven years, further demonstrating his lifelong commitment to service and his country. George was a devout Christian. He was baptized at Sage Baptist Church in Mobile as a teenager and most recently served as a member of Sulligent Community Church.
He is survived by his children, Matthue (Brandy) Ray, Jennifer (Jerry Wayne) Carnley, Paeton Carney, John Carey, and Rodney Carey. He was a grandfather to seven grandsons: Jerry, Cooper, Jayden, Rhoan, Jonah, and Lacey as well as three granddaughters; Lilly, Anastasia, and Emma Grayce. He is also remembered by his brother, Bill Sizemore, as well as former wife of 16 years, Jennifer Leaf Barrett, who remained a part of his life. He also leaves behind two beloved dogs, Chewy and Joey, who were his constant companions. George will be missed and forever remembered by his family and all that knew him.
He is preceded in death by his parents, sisters Connie Osborne, Cora Mae “Corky” Swinney and Mary Clyburn, and mother of his oldest children, Evie “Isabell” Odom.
