Annie Ruth Maddox, age 89, of Fayette passed away on Thursday, March 28, 2024 at the Fayette Medical Center. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 30, 2024, at 3 p.m. from Norwood-Wyatt Chapel Funeral Home in Fayette. Burial will follow in the Union Chapel Free Will Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2-3 p.m. at the funeral home. Brother Robert Yerby and Brother Phil Allen will officiate.

Annie Ruth was born in Gordo, Alabama, to the late Lonnie and Lula Hager on June 25, 1934. She attended Gordo High School, and married Billy Gene Maddox on Feb. 7, 1953. 

For many years, Mrs. Maddox was the principal operator of a small grocery store, Maddox Grocery, in the Bluff Community of Fayette County. Additionally, Annie Ruth was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother to her family.

She also loved her church family, and at the time of her death, she was the oldest member of Union Chapel Free Will Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Gene Maddox; and brothers: James E. Hager, Breland Hager and Clifton Hager.

Survivors include her sons: Keith Maddox (Frieda) and Dean Maddox; grandsons: Bill Maddox and Nolan Maddox; sisters: Doris Banks and Lynda Stephens; step grandsons: Kenny (Denise) Shackelford and Jeff Shackelford; and step great-grandchildren: Hunter Shackelford and McKenzie Shackelford.

Active pallbearers will be: Bill Maddox, Nolan Maddox, Chad Maddox, Cadon Maddox, Hank Stephens, and Calvin Jones.

Honorary pallbearers will be Fayette Medical Center and FMC Long-Term Care employees, Alabama Hospice Care, Dr. Fred Yerby, Rachel Thomas, Jenna Kate Bell and Mary Jackson.
