She was a graduate of Tuscaloosa County High School and later attended the University of Alabama where she received both her Bachelor’s and Master’s. She spent thirty-three years of her career at the University of Alabama; most as Coordinator, Speech-Language Pathology Services. She loved her students and enjoyed watching their development and seeing them succeed. Betty was a life-long member of Wesley Chapel and was the driving force to repair and rebuild the church and fellowship hall after the tornado of 2011. She received her greatest joy by doing for others. She loved her friends and family through action, much of it with her cooking. Her sourdough bread was a favorite of anyone who ever had it! She enjoyed her wide circle of friends and had a gift for making anyone feel special. When you talked with her you always felt like her top priority. Because of this her legacy will be ongoing and her presence will be greatly missed. Her strength and determination were evident in the last years of her life as she faced health issues with resolve and grace. She was preceded in death by her parents, Darden Deats Barton and Florence Walker Barton, and her sisters, Sue Barton Springer and Roena Barton Burns. Survivors include her husband of 42 years, Tommy Carver; her brother, D.D. Barton (Judy); brother-in-law Andy Carver (Jane); brother-in-law, Wayne Carver (Kyra); brother-in-law, Don Springer; brother-in-law, Robert T. Burns; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives. Pallbearers will be her great-nephews: Jonathan Barton, Josh Barton, Robby Burns, Cole Carver, Cooper Carver, Daniel Church, Stephen Church, Matt Joiner, Drew Killgore, Zach Romain and Daniel Swatek. Honorary pallbearers are members of Wesley Chapel Church, the Happy Seniors Group, the staff and alumni of the University of Alabama Speech and Hearing Center, and her friends, family and neighbors of the Ralph community. Her family would like to thank the staff of Hospice of West Alabama and Home Instead. Special thanks to her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Andy and Jane Carver, for their care and support throughout Betty’s illness. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 11, Ralph, Alabama 35480.
