Mrs. Vera Marcelle Matthews, a native of Alabama, and longtime resident of Fayette, AL, died at her home, Friday, November 27, 2015, surrounded by her adoring family and loving caregiver, Ms. Janice Wright. A private service for immediate family was held at Norwood Chapel and interment in Fayette Memorial Gardens with Rev. Blake Thompson and Kerry Kerr officiating. Marcelle was affectionately known as Bubba to her grandchildren and great grandchildren, family and close friends. She had a magnificent love for children and caring for others. She lived out this endearing love, not only in her personal life, but in her offering to God through her community of faith. Having a strong love for care taking, she worked many years in healthcare as a surgical assistant. After moving to Fayette in 1959, she and her husband established Sample Shoe Center and served the community for over 50 years. She also worked for the Board of Education in the Title I program. She was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church, March of Dimes Alabama, and The Business Association of Fayette. Mrs. Matthews was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Eunice Lee Colburn and her sister Robbie Colburn Perry. She is survived by her husband, Donald G. (Pete) Matthews, 2 daughters, Charlotte Rutland (Richard, III, M.D.), and Donna Kerr (Kerry); 4 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren. Pallbearers were Kerry Kerr, Matthew Kerr, Chris Mileski, Reeves Mileski, Jeff Poe, Richard O. Rutland, III, M.D., Matt Weaver and Charles Wilson.
